Almost one in three new German cars in July 2026 was fully electric. The Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt counted 78,609 battery-electric registrations, a 29.3% share, while petrol dropped under a fifth of the market for the first time.

<p>Germany registered <strong>268,068 new passenger cars in July 2026</strong>, up 1.2% on July 2025, according to the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, the federal authority that counts every registration (<a href="https://www.kba.de/DE/Presse/Pressemitteilungen/Fahrzeugzulassungen/2026/pm32_2026_n_07_26_pm_komplett.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KBA press release pm32/2026, 6 August 2026</a>). The market barely moved. The powertrain mix underneath it moved a lot.</p> <h3>78,609 battery-electric cars, a 29.3% share</h3> <p>Battery-electric registrations reached <strong>78,609 units</strong> in July, up <strong>61.7%</strong> year on year, for a <strong>29.3% share</strong> of the month. That is the highest monthly BEV share the KBA has ever published for Germany. Plug-in hybrids added 30,609 units and 11.4%. Taken together with conventional hybrids, 105,284 registrations and 39.3% of the market carried some form of hybrid drive (<a href="https://www.goingelectric.de/2026/08/06/news/neuzulassungen-juli-2026-bev-anteil-steigt-auf-293/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GoingElectric corroboration</a>).</p> <h3>Petrol under a fifth of the market</h3> <p>Petrol fell <strong>29.7%</strong> year on year to an <strong>18.9% share</strong>. Diesel fell 21.8% to 11.8%. Read those two lines next to the flat headline volume and the story is clear: Germany is not buying more cars, it is buying different ones. Average new-car CO2 emissions came in at 91.2 grams per kilometre, down 15.1% on the year, which is the mechanical consequence of the same shift.</p> <h3>The brand table still favours the incumbents</h3> <p>Volkswagen led July with 48,003 registrations and a 17.9% share, though its own volume fell 7.6%. Mercedes took 26,624 units and grew 8.0%, BMW 24,644 units and grew 0.5%, and Skoda 23,331 units. The German BEV surge is not being delivered by a single challenger brand. It is the incumbent line-ups converting their own volume.</p> <h3>Seven months in, the year is up 5.1%</h3> <p>Cumulative registrations for January to July 2026 stand at <strong>1,752,461</strong>, up <strong>5.1%</strong> on the same period last year. The income-tested electric car grant of up to 6,000 euro, backdated to January and running through BAFA, sits underneath that number.
