US July 2026: EV Share Falls to 5.6% as 77,266 Electric Vehicles Sell in a 1.36 Million Market
The US sold about 1.36 million vehicles in July 2026. Only 77,266 were electric, down 41.5% year on year, a 5.6% share and the clearest measure yet of what the federal tax credit was doing.

The United States sold an estimated 1,360,000 new vehicles in July 2026, a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 16.3 million and down 1.8% year on year, according to Cox Automotive (Cox Automotive, updated 4 August 2026). One honest caveat first: the US has no national body that publishes monthly registrations, so every US figure on Autonergy is an industry estimate and is labelled as one.

77,266 EVs, a 5.6% share

Electric vehicle sales were 77,266 units in July, up 3.2% on June but down 41.5% year on year, for a 5.6% share of the total market (Cox Automotive EV Market Monitor, 17 August 2026). The year-on-year collapse measures a policy change rather than a demand change: July 2025 was the last full stretch of the 7,500 dollar federal credit, so the comparison is against a pulled-forward peak.

The price gap is doing the rest

The average electric vehicle transaction price was 56,126 dollars in July, with incentives at 11.8% of that price, roughly 6,626 dollars per vehicle. Incentives fell 9.1% from June and 24.3% from a year earlier. Take a federal credit away and pull manufacturer incentives back at the same time and the effective price of an American EV rose sharply in twelve months. Tesla still accounts for roughly 55% of the segment.

The rest of the market is holding up

What makes the EV line stand out is that the wider market did not fall with it. July's 16.3 million pace was below Cox's own 16.7 million forecast, but the year to date is tracking at a 16.0 million SAAR, ahead of the 15.8 million full-year forecast. American buyers are still buying. They are just buying fewer electric cars than they were a year ago.

Seven months: about 9.19 million vehicles

Cumulative sales for January to July are approximately 9,209,000 units, about 2.8% below the same period of 2025 on the series Autonergy holds. The US is now the clearest example in the panel of what happens when EV policy support is withdrawn quickly, and it is the reason the global EV share chart looks flatter than the European lines alone would suggest.
