Germany registered 212,563 new cars in August 2026, BEV share hit a record 32.4%
Germany registered 212,563 new passenger cars in August 2026, up 2.6% on August 2025, according to the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt. The volume gain was modest. The mix was not: 68,930 of those cars were battery-electric, up 75.1% year on year, taking a record 32.4% share, the first month Germany has cleared 32%, while petrol fell to 16.7% and diesel to 10.6%.

Private buyers are driving the record
Private registrations rose 16.9% and took a 40.5% share of the month, while commercial registrations fell 5.3%. The backdated income-tested electric grant of up to 6,000 euro that BAFA has been paying since 19 May targets private buyers specifically, which lines up with private demand outpacing fleet renewal for a second straight record month.
Two records in a row is a trend, not a print
July set a German record at 29.3% BEV share. August broke it again at 32.4%. Two consecutive record months moves this from a strong single print to a trend line, and the open question is whether it holds once the backdated portion of the grant is fully spent later in the year.
