Germany registered 212,563 new passenger cars in August 2026, up 2.6% on August 2025, and 1,965,024 from January to August, up 4.8%, according to the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA). Battery-electric cars set a record: 68,930 registrations, up 75.1%, for a 32.4% share, the first month above 32%. Plug-in hybrids added 25,406 (12.0%), while petrol fell to 16.7% and diesel to 10.6%. Volkswagen remained the largest brand with 32,233 registrations and a 15.2% share, although it was down 14.0%, while BYD grew 371.8% to 5,256. Private buyers drove the month, with private registrations up 16.9%. Skoda is the strongest established brand of the year, with 167,075 registrations from January to August, up 13.8%.
