How many new cars were sold in the US in August 2026?

The United States sold an estimated 1,381,000 new light vehicles in August 2026, down 5.8% year on year, at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 16.8 million, according to Cox Automotive. It was the sixth straight month above a 16 million SAAR, the longest streak since March 2020. January to August sales total an estimated 10,590,000, and Cox puts the year down 2.7%. Electric vehicles took 5.7% of August sales, an estimated 78,895 units, essentially unchanged from July, and Tesla sold 40,816 of them. Used EV sales rose 25.9% on the month to 44,350. The United States has no national registration body, so every US figure here is an industry estimate and labelled as one.
