How many cars were sold in China in August 2026?

China retailed 1,541,000 passenger cars in August 2026, down 23.6% year on year, according to the China Passenger Car Association's final print. New-energy vehicles were 1,005,000 of them, down 10.1% but up 5.7% on July, taking NEV penetration to a record 65.2%, up 9.9 points on August 2025. From January to August, retail totals 11,716,000, down 20.8%, of which 6,674,000 were NEVs, a 57.0% share. CAAM's wholesale series counts factory shipments including exports, so it runs well above retail: 2,383,000 passenger vehicles in August. Combustion retail is shrinking faster than NEV retail, which is why the electric share keeps setting records even in a falling market.
