Which country sells the most cars in 2026?

China is the largest of the seven car markets AutoNergy tracks, with 11,716,000 passenger cars retailed from January to August 2026, followed by the United States at an estimated 10,590,000 new vehicles and India at 3,388,139. Japan sold 3,111,737 new vehicles including kei cars, Germany registered 1,965,024, the UK 1,388,735 and Ireland 121,979. Electrification varies far more than size: in August 2026 China's new-energy penetration hit a record 65.2% and Germany's battery-electric share a record 32.4%, while the UK reached 29.8%, India 7.63% and the United States 5.7%. Growth varies too. The UK is up 9.8% year to date, Ireland 5% and Germany 4.8%, while China's retail line is down 20.8%. Every figure comes from the body that publishes it: CPCA, Cox Automotive, FADA, JADA and Zenkeijikyo, KBA, SMMT and SIMI. All seven markets are current to August 2026, last verified on 28 September 2026.
