How many cars were sold in India in August 2026?

India retailed 402,398 passenger vehicles in August 2026, up 16.14% year on year and the first August above four lakh, according to FADA's Vahan-based retail data. Manufacturers dispatched 439,309 to dealers, up 36.5%, on SIAM's wholesale count, which runs above retail because it counts cars shipped to dealers rather than cars registered to buyers. From January to August, retail totals 3,388,139 passenger vehicles. August's fuel mix was the headline: CNG and LPG took 25.28%, hybrids 9.04% and electric 7.63%, together 41.95%, ahead of petrol and ethanol on 40.85%, the first month in which the alternatives combined outsold petrol. Diesel took 17.20%. Total vehicle retail across every category was 2,423,201, up 17.51%. This dashboard uses the FADA retail series throughout so every month is comparable, with state and segment breakdowns.
