Updated 9 October 2026 with September data. India retailed 427,213 passenger vehicles in September 2026, up 32.10% year on year and the best month on record for passenger-vehicle retail, taking January to September to 3,815,352 on FADA's Vahan retail series. FADA itself notes the growth rate is flattered by a September 2025 base hit by purchases deferred ahead of GST 2.0. Maruti Suzuki retailed 169,132 of them, a 39.59% share, ahead of Mahindra (57,343, 13.42%), Tata Motors (57,254, 13.40%) and Hyundai (50,201, 11.75%) (FADA via Autocar Professional; full OEM table via Rushlane). FADA does not publish a January to September OEM table, so the share above is for September. Full month in the September 2026 India report.
If you have searched "Maruti market share in India," you have probably read three different numbers from three different press releases. The number that matters is the one the trade bodies confirm: SIAM (manufacturer dispatches) and FADA (retail registrations). On both, Maruti Suzuki sits at around 40% of the Indian passenger-vehicle market.
How big is India's passenger-vehicle market?
India retailed 4.47 million new passenger vehicles in calendar 2025, up 9.7% and the highest annual figure in the country's history (FADA via Business Today). The market crossed the 4-million mark for the first time in FY24, and 2025 confirmed the new structural baseline. India is now the third-largest passenger-car market in the world by volume, behind China and the United States. 2026 has kept the trajectory: every month from January to September retailed more than 3.9 lakh units on FADA's series, and September's 427,213 is the highest monthly figure yet.
The Maruti monopoly, in numbers
Maruti Suzuki's share has hovered around 40% for several quarters running, and September's 39.59% retail share is in line. That is an extraordinary share for any single brand in any major car market globally. By comparison, Toyota's share of the Japanese market is around 31%, Volkswagen's share of the German market 19.6% (KBA, 2025), and Ford's share of the US market around 13%. Maruti's dominance is not new. The company has held number one in India since the mid-1980s. What is new is that even as the market has expanded strongly since 2020, Maruti's share has stayed close to 40%. That is the signature of a moat: dealer reach (the largest network in India), local manufacturing scale, and a price-floor capability that competitors have not matched.
The challenger pack: Mahindra, Tata, Hyundai, Toyota
Below Maruti, the order is contested. In September's FADA retail table Mahindra (57,343) edged Tata Motors (57,254) for second by 89 units, with Hyundai, the long-standing number two, fourth on 50,201. Toyota was fifth with 28,050 and Kia sixth with 26,663. Tata Motors has been climbing on the back of SUVs (Nexon, Punch) and EV leadership. Mahindra and Mahindra, SUV-only, is climbing on the strength of the Scorpio-N, XUV700 and the new Thar 5-door. Toyota Kirloskar is helped by a model-sharing pact with Suzuki.
The SUV story
One number reframes the entire Indian car market: utility vehicles, SIAM's category for SUVs, crossovers and MPVs, took 65% of passenger-vehicle dispatches in FY2024-25 (SIAM). Not long ago they were a minority of the mix. The shift has reshaped who wins. Tata and Mahindra are SUV-heavy and have grown share. Hyundai has SUV strength via Creta and Venue. In AutoNergy's reading, Maruti's relative weakness in the larger SUV segment is the main reason its share is not 50%.
Maruti's EV gap
The one area where Maruti is currently behind is electric. Tata Motors led the Indian EV passenger-car market in 2025 with about 40% of EV registrations, ahead of JSW MG and Mahindra (Vahan data via Autocar Professional). Electric cars took 8.45% of India's passenger-vehicle retail in September 2026, up from 5.74% a year earlier, on FADA's fuel split. Maruti's first BEV, the e Vitara, gives it a route in through its dealer footprint, but Tata, MG and Mahindra have a multi-year head start.
