    How many new cars were registered in Ireland in 2026?

    Ireland registered 121,979 new cars from January to August 2026, up 5% on the same period of 2025, according to SIMI. August added 7,811 registrations, up 3%. Electric cars are the story of the year: 32,079 battery-electric cars have been registered so far in 2026, up 55%, and electric now accounts for 26.3% of the year's registrations, ahead of petrol-electric hybrids on 24.14%, petrol on 20.09%, plug-in hybrids on 14.85% and diesel on 12.56%. August's electric registrations were 2,265, up 7%. The Toyota RAV4 was August's best-selling car and the Volkswagen ID.4 the best-selling electric car. Irish registrations cluster in January because the number plate carries the year, so most of 2026's volume is already in.
