<h3>The August 2026 table</h3>
<p><strong>China: 65.7%</strong> new-energy retail penetration, 1,069,000 NEVs of 1,626,000 cars (<a href="https://cnevpost.com/2026/09/03/china-aug-2026-nev-retail-preliminary-cpca/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CPCA preliminary</a>), up from July's 65.1%. Remember the NEV measure includes plug-in hybrids and range extenders alongside pure battery cars.</p>
<p><strong>Germany: 32.4%</strong> battery-electric, 68,930 BEVs of 212,563 cars (<a href="https://www.kba.de/DE/Presse/Pressemitteilungen/Fahrzeugzulassungen/2026/pm35_2026_n_08_26_pm_komplett.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KBA</a>), a new German record and up from July's 29.3%.</p>
<p><strong>United Kingdom: 29.8%</strong> battery-electric, 28,063 BEVs of 94,236 cars (<a href="https://www.smmt.co.uk/evs-lift-august-new-car-market-but-september-is-key-test/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SMMT</a>). SMMT itself flags this as a seasonal pattern: August is low-volume, so percentage shifts get amplified, a pattern repeated every August since 2023. Read it as a real but exaggerated number, and watch September for the real signal.</p>
<p><strong>Ireland: 26.3% year to date</strong> (electric's share of 2026 registrations through August), up from 26.12% through July, on SIMI's official mix (<a href="https://www.simi.ie/en/news/strong-electric-car-registrations-in-august-budget-2026-must-build-on-momentum" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SIMI</a>).</p>
<p><strong>India and the United States</strong> do not yet have a verified August electric figure. India's FADA release lands mid-month; the US Cox EV Market Monitor for August had not published at the time of writing, so both markets carry their July figures, 7.9% and 5.6% respectively, forward unchanged rather than restated.</p>
<p><strong>Japan</strong> remains the lowest of the panel, in low single digits, in a 307,374-unit month where roughly a third of sales are kei minivehicles.</p>
<h3>Read the two records differently</h3>
<p>China's record is a denominator story: combustion retail keeps shrinking faster than NEV retail, so the share climbs even with NEV's own year-on-year line negative. Germany's record is a demand story: BEV units themselves jumped 75.1% year on year, the strongest single-market BEV growth rate in the panel this month, driven by the backdated federal grant. Two records, two different mechanisms, and neither one transfers cleanly to the UK's number, which SMMT itself describes as seasonally inflated.</p>
