Electric Car Share by Country, July 2026: China 65.1%, Ireland 33%, Germany 29.3%, UK 27.5%, USA 5.6%

Seven markets, one month, one table. July 2026 put China at 65.1% NEV penetration and the United States at 5.6% EV share. The spread between the top and the bottom of the table has never been wider.

Every market Autonergy tracks has now published July 2026. Put the electric shares in one column and the spread is the story: from 65.1% in China to 5.6% in the United States. Same month, same technology, twelve times the share.

The July 2026 table

China: 65.1% new-energy retail penetration, 951,000 NEVs of 1,461,000 cars (CPCA). Note the label: NEV includes plug-in hybrids and range extenders, so it is not directly comparable to a pure battery share.

Ireland: about 33% battery-electric, 9,682 BEVs of 29,046 cars (SIMI). July is a plate month in Ireland, so this is a high-volume month rather than a thin one, which makes the share more meaningful.

Germany: 29.3% battery-electric, 78,609 BEVs of 268,068 cars (KBA), a German record.

United Kingdom: 27.5% battery-electric, 43,106 BEVs of 156,571 cars (SMMT), a UK record and still below the 33% mandate line.

India: 7.9% electric share of passenger vehicle retail, up 83% year on year (FADA).

United States: 5.6%, 77,266 EVs of about 1,360,000 vehicles, down 41.5% year on year (Cox Automotive).

Japan remains the lowest of the seven, with battery-electric sales in low single digits of a 417,163-unit month, a market where a third of all sales are kei minivehicles.

Three different mechanisms, one chart

These numbers are not produced by the same force. China's record share is a denominator effect: petrol retail fell 41% while electric fell 3.9%. Europe's records are demand plus regulation: a backdated 6,000 euro German grant and a UK mandate that penalises manufacturers who miss the line. The American number is policy withdrawal: the federal credit ended and the segment halved. Any chart that puts these side by side without naming the mechanism will mislead you.

What July says about the full year

Europe is on track to close 2026 at record electric shares that still miss their own targets. China will finish above 60% on the NEV measure. The United States will finish near 6%, roughly half of where a straight-line 2024 forecast would have put it. The global EV story in 2026 is not slowing or accelerating, it is diverging by policy regime.
