Germany August 2026: 68,930 BEVs Registered, a Record 32.4% Share, First Month Above Nearly One in Three

Almost one in three new German cars in August 2026 was fully electric. The Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt counted 68,930 battery-electric registrations, a record 32.4% share, up 75.1% year on year.

Germany registered 212,563 new passenger cars in August 2026, up 2.6% on August 2025, according to the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA press release pm35/2026, 3 September 2026). August is usually a quiet month in Germany. The powertrain mix inside it was not quiet at all.

68,930 battery-electric cars, a record 32.4% share

Battery-electric registrations reached 68,930 units, up 75.1% year on year, for a 32.4% share of the month, the first time Germany has cleared 32% in a single month. Plug-in hybrids added 25,406 units and 12.0% (electrive.net corroboration).

Petrol keeps sliding

Petrol fell 37.9% year on year to a 16.7% share. Diesel fell 17.3% to 10.6%. SUVs were the largest body-type segment at 37.6%, up 12.0%. Two consecutive record BEV months, July's 29.3% and August's 32.4%, is no longer a single strong print. It is a trend line moving in one direction.

Private buyers are doing the moving

Private registrations rose 16.9% and took a 40.5% share of the month, while commercial registrations fell 5.3%. That split matters: the backdated income-tested electric grant of up to 6,000 euro that BAFA has been paying out since May targets private buyers specifically, and it is private demand, not fleet renewal, that is pulling the BEV number up.

Eight months in, the year is up 4.8%

Cumulative registrations for January to August 2026 stand at 1,965,024, up 4.8% on the same period last year. Germany is closing in on two million cars for the year with four months still to run, and the electric share of that total keeps climbing every month the grant stays live.

Open the live Germany dashboard for the monthly registration bars, the BEV share line and the KBA-verified brand table.
