India sold approximately 4.55 million passenger vehicles in 2025 according to FADA retail data - a new record, up roughly 6% year-on-year. The market has more than doubled from 2.1M in 2010 and India is now the world's third-largest passenger vehicle market by volume, behind China and the United States.
Maruti Suzuki Still Holds 40%
Maruti Suzuki sold approximately 1.84 million units in 2025, retaining roughly 40% market share. That share is down from a peak of 50%+ in the mid-2010s but Maruti remains by far the dominant force in entry-level and small SUV segments. The new Fronx and Brezza updates kept showroom traffic strong.
Mahindra Surge into #2 SUV Maker
Mahindra crossed ~581,000 PV sales in CY2025 (Autocar India) with the XUV700, Scorpio-N, and the new BE 6/XEV 9e EVs leading. Mahindra has become India's most valuable SUV-only brand and is now a credible #2 by passenger vehicle volume after Maruti.
Tata's EV Lead Holds
Tata Motors sold ~587,000 PVs in 2025 including ~81,000 EVs. The Tiago EV, Punch EV and Curvv EV gave Tata roughly 40%+ of the Indian PV EV market - although Mahindra and Hyundai are aggressively closing the gap.
The EV Inflection
EV passenger vehicle penetration crossed 5.2% of new sales in late 2025, up from 2.5% in 2023. The launches of Mahindra BE 6/XEV 9e (priced from ~INR 18 lakh), Hyundai Creta EV and the upcoming Maruti e-Vitara are expected to push EV share to 8-10% in 2026.
Body Type: SUVs Now Take 57.5%
Utility Vehicles took roughly 65% of FY2024-25 sales (SIAM) - sedans dropped to 12%. The "compact SUV" segment (Brezza, Punch, Nexon, Sonet, Venue) is now the single largest body-type sub-segment in India.
