China NEV penetration hit a record 65.1% in July 2026 as petrol retail fell 41%
China retailed 1,461,000 passenger vehicles in July 2026, down 20.9% year on year and 8.8% on June. New-energy vehicles took a record 65.1% of that market on 951,000 units. The record is real and it is not a growth story: NEV retail itself fell 3.9%, while combustion retail collapsed 41% to 510,000 units.

Why combustion is falling this fast
Two compounding forces. China ran aggressive trade-in and scrappage subsidies through 2025 that pulled a very large volume of purchases forward, so 2026 is measuring against an inflated base. On top of that, domestic petrol prices rose by a cumulative 1,575 yuan per tonne through 2026 after shipping disruption through the Strait of Hormuz, raising running costs on exactly the vehicles that were already losing share.
The mix inside the mix
Plug-in hybrids and range extenders, which carried much of the 2024 and 2025 NEV growth, are now falling faster than pure battery cars. That is a meaningful reversal: the transitional powertrains are losing ground to full electric inside a category that is itself shrinking.
Source and methodology
All figures verified against CPCA final July data as reported by CnEVPost on 11 August 2026 and independently corroborated by just-auto. total_registrations follows CPCA's official cumulative print of 10,173,000; the sum of the published monthly prints is 10,232,000 because CPCA back-revises earlier months. NEV on the CPCA measure includes plug-in hybrids and range extenders, so it is not directly comparable with a European BEV share.
