Car Sales by Country, January to August 2026: China 11.7M, USA 10.6M, India 3.39M

Eight months into 2026, China and the United States account for most of the new cars sold across the seven markets AutoNergy tracks. Germany and the UK are growing, China's retail line is down a fifth, and every total below comes from the national body that publishes it.

Across the seven markets AutoNergy tracks, China sold 11,716,000 passenger cars at retail in January to August 2026, the United States an estimated 10,590,000 new vehicles and India 3,388,139 passenger vehicles at retail. Japan, Germany, the UK and Ireland follow. Every market has now published August, and none has published September yet, so this is the latest complete year-to-date league table available.

The January to August 2026 table

1. China: 11,716,000 passenger cars retailed, down 20.8%, on the China Passenger Car Association's final August print (CPCA via CnEVPost, 8 September 2026). New-energy vehicles were 6,674,000 of them, down 12.1%.

2. United States: 10,590,000 new light vehicles, the sum of Cox Automotive's monthly estimates. Cox puts year-to-date sales down 2.7% and August at 1.381 million units (Cox Automotive, 8 September 2026). The US has no national registration body, so this line is an industry estimate.

3. India: 3,388,139 passenger vehicles retailed, the sum of FADA's monthly Vahan retail prints, with August at 4,02,398.

4. Japan: 3,111,737 new vehicles, JADA's 2,010,756 registered vehicles plus Zenkeijikyo's 1,100,981 kei minivehicles (JADA, 1 September 2026). That total includes trucks and buses; passenger cars alone were 1,751,075 registered plus 849,411 kei, or 2,600,486.

5. Germany: 1,965,024 new passenger cars, up 4.8% (KBA, 3 September 2026).

6. United Kingdom: 1,388,735 new cars, up 9.8% (SMMT, 4 September 2026).

7. Ireland: 121,979 new cars, up 5% (SIMI, 1 September 2026).

Read the definitions before comparing

These are not seven measurements of the same thing. China and India are retail counts, cars sold to buyers. Germany, the UK and Ireland are official registrations of passenger cars. Japan's headline includes commercial vehicles and kei cars. The US is an estimate of all new light vehicles, pickups included. The ranking is robust to those differences; exact ratios between markets are not.

Who is growing

Of the markets that publish a year-to-date growth rate, the UK leads at 9.8%, then Ireland at 5% and Germany at 4.8%. The United States is down 2.7% and China's retail line is down 20.8%, the steepest fall in the panel even as its electric share sets records. September data starts landing in the first days of October, led by SIMI, JADA and KBA.
