Ireland registered a record 9,682 new battery-electric cars in July 2026, up 98% from 4,898 in July 2025, according to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry's official 262 registration release. No previous month has delivered more electric cars onto Irish roads.
Electric moves into first place
The July result lifted battery-electric registrations to 29,840 for the first seven months, 61% higher than the same period last year. Electric cars now hold a 26.12% share of Ireland's 2026 new car market, ahead of petrol hybrids at 24.59%, petrol at 20.39%, plug-in hybrids at 14.45%, and diesel at 12.45%. This is the first point in 2026 when battery-electric is the country's leading powertrain.
The wider market also grew
July delivered 29,046 total new car registrations, up 8.63% year on year. The market reached 114,228 registrations through July, a 5.2% increase. That matters because electric growth did not come from a collapsing overall market. BEVs expanded much faster inside a market that was itself growing.
The models leading the shift
Volkswagen remained the leading electric brand for the year to date. Its ID.4 was Ireland's top-selling electric model, followed by the Toyota bZ4X, Skoda Enyaq, Tesla Model Y, and Skoda Elroq. The July plate change, purchase grants, and the Government's pilot scrappage scheme all supported the surge, according to SIMI.
