Toyota retained the global #1 position in 2024 for the fifth year running. Toyota and Lexus together sold 10,159,336 vehicles worldwide, down 1.4%, and with Daihatsu and Hino the group total was 10,821,480, down 3.7%. Volkswagen Group was second with 9.03 million, down 2.3% (Toyota and VW figures via Carscoops, January 2025). The big change further down the league: BYD sold 4,272,145 vehicles, up 41% (Just Auto).
Group-Level Picture
Behind Toyota and Volkswagen, the next tier is made up of Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai, Kia, Genesis), General Motors, Stellantis and Ford, each a multi-brand group selling several million vehicles a year. BYD, a single brand, now sells at a scale comparable to some of these groups. Brand-level rankings vary with how sub-brands and joint ventures are counted, so AutoNergy compares groups rather than publishing a single brand top 10.
BYD's Trajectory
BYD sold about 730,000 vehicles in 2021, almost all in China. Reaching 4.27 million three years later is one of the fastest scale-ups the industry has seen.
