VW ID Series vs Tesla in Germany: ID.4, ID.7 vs Model Y, Model 3

The Tesla Model Y was still Germany's best-selling BEV in 2024, but its lead over VW Group models shrank sharply, and Tesla halved again in 2025. Here's the data.

In 2024 the Tesla Model Y was still Germany's best-selling BEV with 29,896 registrations, but its lead had shrunk sharply. The Skoda Enyaq (25,262) and the VW ID.4/ID.5 (21,611) followed, and VW Group models took six of the top seven places (KBA figures via Elektroauto-News). In 2025 Tesla's total German registrations fell 48.4% to 19,390, while VW brand registrations rose 4.5% (KBA). VW has found its EV stride in its home market after years of trailing Tesla.

The ID.7 Surprise

The VW ID.7 (a fastback EV sedan and estate launched late 2023) registered 14,554 units in Germany in 2024, ahead of the Mercedes EQE in the BEV table. German fleet buyers like a sedan-shaped BEV, and the ID.7 is the VW BEV best placed to win that vote.

Tesla Model 3 Decline

The refreshed Tesla Model 3 ("Highland") shipped from Q1 2024 but has not regained its earlier German volumes, and Tesla's brand total fell from about 63,700 in 2023 to 37,574 in 2024 and 19,390 in 2025. The German fleet market has gradually re-baselined to local German EVs.

Where Tesla Still Wins

Tesla retains strengths in long-distance touring (Supercharger network) and software updates. The Model Y was still the single best-selling BEV in Germany in 2024, but its position is far less dominant than it was in 2022-2023.
