World's Largest Car Markets 2025: China, USA, Japan and India Top the Table

China sells about 5x more cars than India. The US sells 8x more than the UK. Here's the ranked table of the largest car markets for 2025.

Global light-vehicle sales run to tens of millions a year, and China is by far the largest single market. Here is the ranked list of the largest car markets AutoNergy tracks for 2025, plus the big European markets. Each body measures slightly differently (retail, registrations or sales, with or without light trucks), so treat close pairs as roughly equal:

Largest Markets by 2025 Volume

  1. China: 23.74M passenger vehicles (CPCA retail, up 3.8%)
  2. United States: ~16.3M light vehicles (Cox Automotive, up 1.8%)
  3. Japan: 4.57M (JADA and Zenkeijikyo, all new vehicles incl. kei, up about 3%)
  4. India: 4.47M passenger vehicles (FADA retail, up 9.7%)
  5. Germany: 2.86M (ACEA, up 1.4%)
  6. UK: 2.02M (ACEA, up 3.5%)
  7. France: 1.63M (ACEA, down 5.0%)
  8. Italy: 1.52M (ACEA, down 2.1%)

Brazil and South Korea are also large markets in this range, but AutoNergy does not track them and they are not ranked here.

Per-Capita Comparison

Population-adjusted, mature markets such as the US, Germany and Ireland register far more new cars per person each year than China, and far more again than India. The US's truck-heavy mix puts it well above per-capita European levels.

Where Growth Comes From

India (+9.7%) grew fastest of the large markets in 2025, followed by China (+3.8%) and the UK (+3.5%). The US (+1.8%) and Germany (+1.4%) grew modestly, while France and Italy shrank.
