India retailed 4.47 million passenger vehicles in 2025, a new record and up 9.7% year-on-year (FADA figures via Business Today, 6 January 2026). India is the world's third-largest passenger vehicle market by volume, behind China and the United States.
Maruti Suzuki Still Holds About 40%
Maruti Suzuki retained roughly 40% market share in 2025. That share is down from a peak of 50%+ in the mid-2010s but Maruti remains by far the dominant force in entry-level and small SUV segments. The new Fronx and Brezza updates kept showroom traffic strong.
Mahindra Surge into #2 SUV Maker
Mahindra grew strongly in 2025 with the XUV700, Scorpio-N, and the new BE 6/XEV 9e EVs leading. It is now a credible challenger for the #2 spot by passenger vehicle volume after Maruti.
Tata's EV Lead Holds
Tata Motors retailed 69,955 electric cars in 2025, up 13%, a 40% share of India's 176,538 electric passenger vehicle registrations, down from 62% in 2024 (Vahan data via Autocar Professional). JSW MG Motor (51,376, 29%) and Mahindra (33,512, 19%) closed much of the gap.
The EV Inflection
EV passenger vehicle penetration was 3.95% of retail across 2025, up from 2.45% in 2024 (FADA). The launches of the Mahindra BE 6/XEV 9e, Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti e Vitara kept it climbing: FADA's June 2026 data put the monthly EV share at 7.75%.
Body Type: Utility Vehicles Now Take 65%
Utility Vehicles took roughly 65% of FY2024-25 passenger vehicle dispatches (SIAM). The "compact SUV" segment (Brezza, Punch, Nexon, Sonet, Venue) is now one of the largest body-type sub-segments in India.
