The United States sold approximately 16.3 million new light vehicles in 2025, up 1.8% on 2024 and the best result since 2019, according to Cox Automotive. Behind the headline rise sits a structural shift: hybrids kept gaining, EVs took 7.8% of sales, down from 8.1% in 2024 (Cox Automotive / Kelley Blue Book), and the Toyota brand stayed ahead of Ford as America's top-selling brand.
Toyota Beats Ford for the Second Year
Ford F-Series remained the best-selling individual model with 828,832 units sold, its 49th year as America's best-selling truck and 44th as best-selling vehicle (Ford Q4 2025 sales release). But at the brand level, the Toyota division's 2,147,811 sales (Toyota Motor North America release) narrowly beat the Ford brand's 2,097,256, the second year running that Toyota has led at the brand level on these figures. Add Lexus and Toyota Motor North America sold 2,518,071 vehicles, second only to General Motors, which Cox puts at 17.3% of the market.
The Hybrid Surge
Hybrid sales kept growing in 2025. Toyota Motor North America alone sold 1,183,248 electrified vehicles, 47.0% of its volume and up 17.6%. The Hyundai/Kia hybrid lineup (Tucson, Sportage) also accelerated. Importantly, hybrids now outsell BEVs in the US, a different shape to Europe and China, where pure-electric leads electrified.
BEV: Holding, Not Surging
EV share was 7.8% in 2025, slightly down from 8.1% in 2024, on 1,275,714 sales. Tesla still led with 589,160 units, down 7% and a 46.2% share, as Chevrolet (96,951, led by the Equinox EV), Ford (84,113) and Hyundai (65,717) held or gained volume. The federal tax credit ended on 30 September 2025, pulling demand into the third quarter and leaving fourth-quarter EV sales down 36% year on year (Kelley Blue Book estimates).
Pickup Trucks: Still the Anchor
Ford sold 828,832 F-Series trucks in 2025 and Stellantis 374,059 Ram pickups, on the makers' own full-year releases. Full-size pickups took 14.2% of all US new-vehicle sales in November 2025 on Cox Automotive and Kelley Blue Book data. See the pickup market breakdown.
