Indian dealers retailed 402,398 passenger vehicles in August 2026, up 16.14% year on year, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, which reads registrations straight from the government Vahan portal. FADA published the release on 7 September 2026 (The Tribune report of the FADA release, corroborated by AutoGuideIndia). It is the best August the segment has ever recorded and the first August above four lakh units.
Alternative fuels overtook petrol for the first time
The month's real story is the powertrain split. CNG took 25.28% of passenger-vehicle retail, hybrids 9.04% and battery-electric 7.63%. Together that is 41.95%, ahead of petrol and ethanol on 40.85%. It is the first month in which the three alternative fuels have collectively outsold petrol in India. Diesel took the remaining 17.20% (AutoPunditz fuel-mix breakdown).
Read the milestone carefully. Petrol is still the single largest individual fuel in India by a wide margin, and nothing has replaced it. What has happened is that three separate alternatives, each growing for different reasons, now add up to more than it. CNG is a running-cost decision in the cities where the filling network exists. Hybrids are a Maruti and Toyota product decision. Electric is still the smallest of the three at 7.63%, and it slipped from July's 7.90%.
The whole market, not just cars
Total vehicle retail across every category reached 2,423,201 units, up 17.51%, the biggest August India has recorded. Wheeled construction equipment led the growth rates at 31.45%, then two-wheelers at 19.69%, passenger vehicles at 16.14% and commercial vehicles at 14.45%. Three-wheelers grew 8.64% and tractors were effectively flat at 0.84%.
Month on month the total was down 6.48%, which is a calendar effect rather than a demand signal: the monsoon runs through August and this year's festival buying window moved into September.
Retail against dispatch
As with every India figure on Autonergy, this is the FADA retail line, meaning vehicles actually registered by buyers. SIAM, the manufacturers' body, counts dispatches from factory to dealer, which is a different and usually larger number. Autonergy's India series uses FADA retail throughout so every month on the chart is comparable.
Eight months: 3,388,139 passenger vehicles
India has now retailed 3,388,139 passenger vehicles in the first eight months of 2026 on the FADA basis. The festive stretch from late September through Diwali is still ahead and is normally the strongest run of the Indian year, so the fuel-mix crossover recorded in August will be tested immediately at much higher volume.
