Tata Motors retailed 69,955 EVs in calendar year 2025, up 13%, about 40% of India's 176,538 electric passenger vehicle registrations and down from 62% in 2024 (Vahan data via Autocar Professional). The Tata EV lineup includes the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV (the original best-seller) and the Curvv EV launched in August 2024.
Why Tata Got the Lead
Tata launched the Nexon EV in January 2020, well before any other mainstream Indian OEM. The 2020-2023 window let Tata build dealer EV expertise, charging partnerships, and brand association. By the time competitors arrived in scale, Tata had a head start of several years.
The MG and Mahindra Surge
JSW MG Motor sold 51,376 electric cars in 2025, up 136%, for a 29% share, helped by the Windsor EV. Mahindra launched the BE 6 and XEV 9e in late 2024 on its dedicated INGLO BEV platform and delivered 33,512 electric SUVs in 2025, a 19% share. Together they fragmented the EV market away from a Tata monopoly. Hyundai's Creta Electric, launched in January 2025, lifted Hyundai to about 4%.
The Maruti Wildcard
Maruti Suzuki's first EV, the e Vitara, has now reached the market. Maruti's distribution scale, the largest dealer network in India, means even modest e Vitara success could push EV penetration noticeably higher.
What's Holding Mass EV Adoption Back
Three factors. First, public charging is concentrated in metros, Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities still struggle. Second, sub-INR 10 lakh EV options remain limited (the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet are among the few). Third, used-EV values are still being established, making some first-time EV buyers hesitant.
