VW ID Series vs Tesla in Germany: ID.4, ID.7 vs Model Y, Model 3

VW's ID.4 outsold Tesla Model Y in Germany in 2024 - a first for VW Europe. The ID.7 is now winning fleet contracts. Here's the data.

In 2024 the VW ID.4 outsold the Tesla Model Y in Germany for the first time - roughly 23,000 units to ~22,000 units. In 2025 the gap widened: VW ID.4 ~28,000 vs Model Y ~22,000. VW finally found its EV stride in its home market after three years of underperformance versus Tesla.

The ID.7 Surprise

The VW ID.7 (a fastback EV sedan launched late 2023) crossed 18,000 German registrations in 2025 - putting it ahead of the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE in fleet sales. German fleet buyers like a sedan-shaped BEV, and the ID.7 is the first VW BEV to win the fleet vote convincingly.

Tesla Model 3 Decline

The refreshed Tesla Model 3 ("Highland") shipped from Q1 2024 but has not regained 2022/2023 German volumes. Model 3 German sales fell from 25,000 in 2023 to ~14,000 in 2024 and ~16,000 in 2025. The German fleet market has gradually re-baselined to local German EVs.

Where Tesla Still Wins

Tesla retains a clear advantage on long-distance touring (Supercharger network), software updates, and resale value. Model Y remains the single best-selling BEV in Germany overall when you count all trim levels - its position is just less dominant than it was in 2022-2023.
